August 2010 Round up

Knowledge & Networking News

Dear Members and Colleagues,

Welcome back to those who made it away on their hols in August and for those that didn’t, you can always look forward to the fact that schools start back next week and quieter days will return.

With a busy schedule in place supporting several AIME initiatives, we took the unusual step of  holding the inaugural meeting of AIME’s Fixed Line Forum in August. Meeting notes have been distributed to participants and if you would like to sign up for this group and/or be kept up to date with progress please let us know – it will be a busy time for the working group over the coming weeks with Ofcom’s NTS consultation, BT PRS Bad Debt, Higher Rate PRS and VAT increase all on Ofcom’s agenda Sept/Oct. AIME’s Interactive Services for Charities Forum will meet in September, and we look forward to working with this sector to help grow demand for funding and engagement using interactive technologies.

We are pleased to welcome onboard 6 new members this month, SB7 Mobile, Mkodo, 2waytraffic, Xonadu, Ready Made Telecom, and SP Consulting following AIME’s 12th Code Events in July.  The events helped build awareness of the impact of regulatory changes for promoters, and the feedback fed into AIME’s response to the 12th Code. We are pleased to see more promoters now feeding in.

Member issues regarding the PRS regulatory process and 12th Code will be amongst the matters discussed at AIME’s quarterly meeting with PhonepayPlus this month, and we will look to feedback to members on progress at the forthcoming AIME GM.

Best wishes,

Toby Padgham
AIME General Secretary

Chairman's Brief

Dear Members,

Welcome back from the August holiday season, which I trust allowed all members time for at least a little R&R.

The AIME team are now bracing themselves for a busy September, with PhonepayPlus due to consult on the 12th Code Guidance and details of Ofcom’s Review of Non-Geographic Call Services also expected to be released. The thorny issue of tackling the VAT increase will also be high on the agenda as we digest the outcome of the recent members survey. I hope you will be able to attend the AIME GM on the 8th September which will be a key opportunity to take stock and ready the sails for the challenges of the coming months. With Ofcom changes to Participation TV coming into force on the 1st September this is also a good opportunity to highlight the newly published AIME Psychic Services Best Practice Guide. Psychic Services are a popular participation TV format and the likely media attention on this sector as the rules come into place will hopefully be a great opportunity for providers to sign up to the guide and showcase the best practice principles that characterise the sector.

I look forward to working with you all over the coming months.

Edward Boddington
AIME Chair

AIME, IAB, IMRG survey finds consumers are ahead of retailers when it comes to M-Commerce. More training and awareness needed

Until now the credibility of mobile commerce has been largely built on the success of selling ringtones, games, screensavers and other bits and pieces of digital content. Thanks to a few unscrupulous content promoters that credibility was stretched to breaking point after some high profile subscription-billing scandals rocked the industry and led to a regulatory crackdown in 2007. Since then revenues have dropped as consumers lost trust. However, over the past few months growing interest from major high street retailers in the mobile channel looks set to pave the way for the real arrival of m-commerce.

Last month AIME, along with trade bodies IAB and IMRG released findings of some combined research into this sector which found that over half of UK retail brands expect revenues from mobile channels to rise over the next 12 months and 65 percent plan to launch a transactional mobile site within two years. Although 94 percent of those retailers surveyed sited mobile as a real opportunity for future growth, the research worryingly found that only 20 percent of the 20 most popular UK retailer websites were actually optimised for mobile browsing.
