May 2012 Round up

Knowledge & Networking News

Dear Members,

After the months of discussion, research, analysis and debate in the AIME working group Payforit 4 is here!

AIME was pleased to support the Mobile Network Operator unveiling of version 4 at Connected Summit (May 15th),  including workshops outlining the new developments and opportunities, and a well attended networking evening.  With new look merchant centred branding, html5 and single click billing, significant improvements have been made and the initial feedback from merchants is promising.

With the introduction of Payforit 4, attention turns to achieving seamless integration for billing within the android application environment. AIME’s In-App billing group has already begun the next stage of the journey taking the discussion to the app development community.  AIME is pleased to welcome new members Boku and Global Charge who, with their specialism in the App billing market, will contribute to the debate.

In my keynote at the Connected Summit, I also noted that the UK premium rate market declined by just over 6% in 2011 generating almost £800m revenues.  One of the key trends is that market and billing is migrating to online and there are various new forms of micropayment which are competing with the traditional premium rate billing model.  For example, research shows that premium rate is only used by 15% of adults versus 64% that have used PayPal.  A key part of AIME’s work under the Future Media Group (FMG) is to provide better understanding of the values and dynamics of various micropayment solutions and the opportunities they present for market growth. The research produced at the end of last year by the FMG into different micropayment mechanisms and their individual properties, is now being followed up with work to understand micropayment relevance to customer behaviour and consumption.  Members will be able to use this research to map service types against best in breed payment mechanisms and access stats such as market sizing by sector and payment type in order to help with business planning.

We shouldn’t forget that there are some premium rate sectors showing strong growth including charities which generated almost £50m in out payments in 2011 and international call services which grew at over 100% last year.  In the second half of this year I expect to see strong growth from the gambling sector, opportunities to monetise engagement time around second screen interaction, and with increasing investment by mobile operators in direct to bill (including Payforit 4) and mobile crediting, there are some positive indications for further Industry growth.

All these opportunities for growth need to be underpinned by a regulatory framework which balances the necessary levels of consumer protection without hampering Industry development and growth. This requires close co-operation between Industry and the relevant regulatory bodies, and over the next few months AIME’s regulatory working group will commence work to address some of the recent issues raised under the PhonepayPlus and Ofcom Codes. We will look to gain member views along the way and stimulate debate through our blog. To start this process please see below a few poignant thoughts from member Beyond Dispute.

New technology - problems or potential?

Authored by Olivia Van Der Werff, Beyond Dispute

With an ever-increasing number of routes to engage with the audience the inevitable question of how to ensure and demonstrate ongoing compliance can't be avoided.

In the space of only a few months we have seen greatly increased use of social media, the successful introduction of voice short codes for voting, SMS voting and an ever growing desire for cost effective and high profile ways for broadcasters and production companies to engage directly with the viewer.

Social media provides frighteningly limitless ways to connect with audiences – both to promote discussion and interest – and to allow voting and direct engagement.

The opportunities are immense and inevitably these opportunities bring with them new challenges and implications for risk management.
