January 2011 Round up

Knowledge & Networking News

Dear Members and Colleagues,

A belated Happy New Year to you and with Sky and ITV switching on their new mobile voting apps this month for ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’ and Sky’s ‘Got to Dance’ the glowing predictions for converged media in 2011 already appear to be coming of age.

With apps exploding into the mainstream consumer conscious in 2010, what once required a leap in consumer buying behaviour is now a logical next step for an army of smartphone wielding shoppers. Through the Mobile Commerce Joint Industry Committee I’m pleased to see AIME at the forefront of discussions with prominent retail brands to catalyse this evolution. It joins up well with the recently launched Forward Look Working Group, which is focused on initiatives to support consistent quality and continuity of service across multiple platforms, using multiple micro-payment mechanisms. Ultimately, this is the challenge for the industry – we’re right to make a fuss about an exciting new voting channel, however ultimately we need to be able to provide ubiquitous engagement with consumers across all destination sites and not just specific devices.  This will be the challenge and guess who will be the King?  Answer – Consumer as he or she will choose what device they will want to be using, at a time of their suiting.

The increasing investment in mobile by retail brands is also reflected in the gaming and gambling sector, which has seen most of the main online bookmakers shift around 10% of their total business to mobile in 2010, with some predicting growth of a further 200% in mobile wagers in 2011. Members will be aware that mobile gambling has been slow to take off for various reasons and I’m therefore delighted to report that AIME is launching a new ‘Gaming and Gambling’ working group to support sector growth.

Behind the scenes during January the AIME team has been engaged with PhonepayPlus in discussion over the final details of the 12th Code and Registration Scheme, due to be published in March. I am aware that hints over the future regulation of e-wallets and coins have been a source of particular concern for the industry and AIME is working across relevant regulatory bodies to ensure there is clarity of remit.

Finally, I would like to welcome new members, Telecom Express, MGT, Cork & Leather and Beyond Dispute to AIME; we look forward to their contribution at future forums and events.

Yours Sincerely,

Edward Boddington
AIME Chair

Updates to Broadcasting Code point the way for new Mobile interactivity

Last November as a result in part of AIME’s lobbying of Ofcom, the regulator made an important update to its Broadcast Code which recognised the role of applications in participation TV. We predicted then that this would reignite the touch paper for mobile interactive TV services.

Last week AIME member, Mobile Interactive Group, launched its Interactive Broadcast Platform and announced exclusive deals with SKY and ITV ( specifically re-introducing mobile voting ) . This perfectly exemplifies how savvy service providers and broadcasters alike are now more keen than ever to explore the opportunities presented by mobile subject to there being strict adherence to compliance and a positive user experience.
