Mobile Commerce Joint Industry Committee (MCJIC)

Who are MCJIC?

The Mobile-Commerce Joint Industry Committee (MCJIC) is a collective initiative established by the Association of Interactive Media and Entertainment (AIME), the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG). The board of MCJIC also has members of eBay, Marks and Spencer, Mobile Interactive Group, Tesco and Everything Everywhere.

What is the purpose of MCJIC?

The aim of the initiative is to ensure that businesses understand the changes, opportunities and challenges that accompany the growth of mobile-commerce and to provide best practice information to assist in the development of business cases. By bringing together the resources and wide-ranging expertise of the industry associations and retailers, MCJIC is in a unique position to be able to provide education around this complex area in a clear and concise manner.

Why is MCJIC needed?

According to research carried out for AIME, the IAB and IMRG in October 2010, covering 140 marketing professionals from the retail, advertising and mobile service provider sectors:

• Just four out of the top 20 most frequently visited retailer websites are presently optimised for mobile.
• Only eight of the top 20 have any kind of mobile application for smartphones like the iPhone, Blackberry or Android powered devices.
• 41% of UK retail brands expect to have a transactional mobile site or application within the next year.

Most retailers believe their mobile revenues will increase over the next few years; however, currently around 63% either make less than 1% of their total revenues via mobile or do not measure their mobile revenues at all at present, citing a lack of knowledge and expertise about the mobile platform.

What is the remit of MCJIC?

• All areas of the mobile-commerce experience, including payments, site optimisation, fraud-prevention and security, mobile marketing, app creation, coupons and age verification.
• Development and support for building business cases through best practice guidelines.
• Providing clarity around legislation, mobile practices and consumer trends.
• Bringing together the most important research and reports into mobile-commerce and condensing down to the key findings that businesses need to be aware of.
• Working with other organisations where appropriate to ensure broadest possible reach. most important research and reports into mobile-commerce and condensing down to the key findings that businesses need to be aware of.
