The Future of Payforit
The mobile payment market may finally be getting somewhere in the U.K. This week the five main UK mobile operators jointly launched the new payment service called Payforit. Similar in concept to the Vodafone m-payments scheme, Payforit will be limited to transactions under £10
Users will be able to make transactions from mobile Internet sites but also access a separate site to view their overall payment history. Unlike past micropayment schemes, transactions will be handled by third party Accredited Payment Intermediaries (APIs), such as our sponsor Dialogue Communications, rather than the operators themselves - although users will still be billed for the service through their mobile contract agreements.
The Payforit initiative was established in May 2006, but it's taken more than a year for operators to agree on best practices for the service and to try to convince the industry that this is not just another short-lived attempt at bringing m-payments into the mass market. Only time will tell us if users are convinced, but in the meantime, the mobile content industry still has some big concerns over how Payforit will perform which will be discussed in the seminar including:
- Inconsistency in approach by MNOs to:
- Use of true WAP Billing versus PSMS behind Payforit sites
- Changes in out payments from MNOs to content providers
- Integration fees for TPI
- Use of Payforit on operators portals
- Pre-opt in and double opt-in marketing
- Scenarios where Payforit cannot be used e.g. text alerts
- Age Verification
- Identification of content provider on operator billing to customers
- MSISDN pass-through rules for third parties
- Success factors with Payforit
- Future for Payforit

Content Creation and Traffic Generation
How can content providers drive mobile users to their content? An enormous amount of mobile commerce occurs outside the top 20 per cent of content providers. However, this 'long-tail' needs a much more efficient and inclusive content discovery and distribution model. As with the web, content providers from enthusiastic amateurs such as unsigned music groups, photographers or indeed anyone that is able to create digital media, however niche its appeal, need to be encouraged to use the mobile channel as a viable platform through which to reach a vast market of consumers. By leveraging mobile search and discovery technology and allowing any content provider to publish, price, sell and deliver content through a web-based 'self service' model the mobile content long tail will have moved a giant step forward.

- Ben Tatton-Brown, Sales Director, Pitch
- Mark Slade, MD, 4th Screen Advertising

Are M-Payments About To Go Mainstream?
With new mobile payment methods rolling out that will overcome the limitations of pSMS, payments for mobile
content and payments for all sorts of services could be about to become much more common currency.
SMS was the surprise discovery as a way to collect impulse payments for mobile content. The ready access to
payment on the phone and the inbuilt capacity to handle to support thousands of users‘ transactions led to the
wide use of SMS for small transactions. According to Jupiter Research more than 1.4 billion euros revenue was
generated for mobile operators via pSMS across Europe in 2004. Mobile content could be about to receive a big
boost with the recent news of a single price for music downloads from Vodafone and the other UK operators said
to be following shortly behind, increasing the pressure to address the issues around pSMS. Although pSMS will
be with us for a while yet, various new m-payment approaches are about to change the mobile payments landscape
for both consumers and content providers.
This event will look at the new mobile payments from several different angles and look at the impact on the
mobile content industry.
Speakers were
- Jeremy Flynn, Head of Commercial Partnerships, Vodafone
- Roy Vella, Head of Mobile Services, PayPal Europe
- Ashley Ward, CEO, Upaid
